We love a parade!

We love a parade!
November 14, 2012 Visit Madison

Like the Indiana city depicted in the 1983 classic movie “A Christmas Story,” Madison hosts an annual Christmas parade with marching bands and floats and costumed characters.

It’s a wonderful tradition. We came to appreciate that tradition even more in 2011 when the parade was unexpectedly canceled. That year there were a lot of disappointed children and adults.

Madison folks vowed not to let that happen again, and this year’s parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, will be bigger and brighter than ever.

The remarkable Aaron Kelsey is in charge. Aaron is the one who brought big, bold musicals to Madison High School as the school’s stand-out theatre director. He knows what production elements feed the crowd’s sense of wonder. He loves color and spectacle, so we’ll see lots of that in this year’s Christmas parade.

Aaron has promised three marching bands, several themed floats, dancers and appearances by such beloved children’s characters as Garfield and Curious George. The entire parade is geared to hold a child’s interest. Of course the man of the hour, old Santa himself, will enter town triumphantly in the parade’s finale.

Whatever the weather on Dec. 1, dozens of volunteers will be on Main Street that morning to make sure the parade comes off without a hitch. The children won’t be let down this year. You can count on it!

Generations of Madison parents have brought their children downtown on the first Saturday in December to enjoy this unique holiday tradition. You are invited to share the joy too.
