Music Fills the Air in August

August 7, 2013 By VisitMadison Leave a Comment

Music will fill the air in Madison this August beginning with Music in the Park on August 9th featuring Slick River Rockets.  With their fun and energetic take on what they call “rockabilly”, their Elvisesque swing sound will get you up on your feet.  Be sure to bring a lawn chair and have a fun summer evening around the Broadway Fountain.

For old standard lovers, on August 10th from 1-3pm  89-year-old Jimmy Storms, former member of the Red Skelton Orchestra and backup pianist for Pat Boon, Connie Francis, and Fred Astaire, plays a wide selection of old standards on the Steinway grand at Village Lights Book Store.  If you miss the August performance, Jimmy usually plays once a month at the store.

Don’t forget, the best blues performers in the world will be on stage at Madison Ribberfest, August 16 & 17 along the riverfront.  Saturday night headliner is Kenny Wayne Sheppard.  Still barely in his 30s, the Louisiana born axeman and songsmith has been selling millions of albums, throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens.  Friday night headliner is Robert Randolph and the Family Band, an American funk and soul band led by pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph.  Additional performers include:  Lloyd Jones Band, Cash Box Kings, Dog House Kitchen, Dust Radio, Josh Garrett, Carolyn Wonderland and Rick Estrin and the Nightcats.  For only $20, you can see the best blues has to offer along with killer BBQ, kid’s entertainment. boat cruises and more.

Discover the joy of the sounding brass with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Brass Ensemble as they perform pop, classical and various genres of jazz music in an outdoor concert on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the north lawn of the Lanier Mansion in downtown Madison. Proceeds from the concert will help fund Historic Site programming and building improvements.

Concert-goers will hear crisp marches, melodic classics and pop favorites such as That’s a Plenty, Ain’t Misbehaving, Amazing Grace, music of Star Wars, Fanfare from La Peri and other works by John Williams, Paul Dukas and Victor Ewald.

Wine will be available for sale from the Madison Vineyards Winery. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the Lanier Madison Visitor Center located 601 West First St.

Admission to the concert is $5 per adult and $2 per child.  To purchase tickets or to get more information, please contact Anne Fairchild at 812.273.4531 or afairchild@indianamuseum.org.

We’ll be Rockin’ on the River, August 31st with the return of The Monarchs to Madison’s Riverfront.  Following the River Run XVII Car Show, the music begins at 6:30 with local favorite NUMC Praise Band.  The Monarchs take the stage at 8pm.  This is a free event with donations accepted.  All proceeds benefit the local Salvation Army.

Bring your lawn chairs, friends, dancin’ shoes and enjoy a great night of music, food and fun under the stars.

If your taste runs to smooth jazz, enjoy the smooth, collaborative sounds of Tom Schneider on piano and special guest Paul Hawthorne on vibes and vocals from 1-3pm at Village Lights Book Store on August 31st.  Fresh arrangements of classic jazz standards are the forte of this well-known Cincinnati duo. They have graced the Queen City musical scene for over fifteen years. Vocals and piano with a silky smooth jazz vibe!

If you are any kind of music lover or just love to spend an evening under the stars, you can find all the music and entertainment you enjoy in August in Madison.
