Home Cooking Warms the Community Spirit

Home Cooking Warms the Community Spirit
October 11, 2012 Visit Madison

Soup, Stew, Chili, and Brew is now one of my favorite Madison events, and I think it’s because it is all about community and sharing.  I used to think it was all about food, but after living in Madison for several years, I understand why communities host these kinds of events.

Of course delicious homemade food is good anytime, but I am proud to live in a town where charity and fellowship are valued. There is something magical about walking down the middle of Main Street, and sampling the fruits of my neighbor’s labor. It’s as if Madison steps back in time to an era when community is more important than commercialism.

The event is free to enter, and tickets can be purchased and used for sampling the various concoctions of local cooks. Once you have decided on a favorite, the tickets can be used to purchase a larger bowl of soup. Homemade desserts are also found in abundance at this casual feast. There is always live music, and picnic tables, so it’s the kind of gathering that is perfect for meeting friends and enjoying the fall weather.

Participating businesses and individuals choose a charity to support, so even though there’s a contest, it’s obvious that the local chefs are there for the love of it: The love of sharing.

This annual event is this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The music will be at the corner of Main and Broadway. Event sponsored by the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce.
